You mean for determining whether the user has a live connection?
Well, if you try it with a dialup account the machine will try to
dial out. It might or might nbot work with proxy or firewall
connections. And in general it is a very bad idea to try to go online
without telling the user. For instance here in Milwaukee we get
billed for *every local phone call* made. I'd much rather your
program simply asked me if I had a net connect than try to dial out
and inflate my phone bill.
It's just so much easier -- and more reliable -- to ask. I don't
understand the pathological terror programmers seem to have of
expecting the user to know a *few* relatively minor details about his
or her computer.
This is almost on par with trying to autodetect a printer; it would
be crazy to try to do so because there are so many ways in which the
code can go wrong. One unforseen circumstance is sufficient to
destroy all your careful effort at clandestinely making
determinations about the user's machine.
Just ask! "Do you have an internet connection? Yes | No"
