I'm sure that there was a problem in this area in Director 8. I'm sure that a problem was fixed in this area in Director 8.5. I'm sure that the fix solved the problem in my project. I only throw this out as a suggestion for you to try.
In my case, "migrating" to Director 8.5 turned out to no problem at all. I think the only change that I had to make was to change the continuation character to a "\".
