You don't need them, actually -- you can in fact slap things into 
framescripts, or behaviors with props or whatever.

I've jsut wrapped up major production on something that uses a 
kajillion lines of code to do ridiculously complicated things, and 
did it all in OOP. I do not have a global anywhere.

It's niiiiiice.
