This would have been my suggestion too, if I got around to saying 
something useful! One important thing for you to do is to keep an 
exact copy of the file that your user has installed. That way you can 
make the patch file based on the difference between the old version 
and the new version, and it should then bring your user up to the 
state of your new version.
