you may try to import them as linked members (choose 'link media') in 
the import dialog.
otherwise you'll probably have to change your lingo to deal with swa 
members and insert->media instead and change the file extension of 
the mp3 file to .swa.
but, unless there's something strange to the mp3 files, importing 
them as linked media yields a member of type #sound, which is 
controlled by the same lingo as for imported soundmembers.
it definately works, since I've done it on x-platform CDs myself.

if you import the soundfile as internal sound it will be translated 
into directors soundformat anyway, regardless of the source 
compression anyway.
