Actually there was a more recent discussion about this on Direct-L here:

Some in the thread suggest restarting Director - this does not work, another 
suggestion is to comment out all code that creates symbols, recompile scripts, then 
save and compact - no idea whether this works or not.
Take a look throught the thread, it may help...
