How common is the Indeo 5.1 codec? (is this something they should even be

I believe MS discontinued distributing it with WinXP.

I can test for the presence of the codec by checking for the file ir5*.*
inside of the system32 folder, but,
if I don't find it, can I just copy ir50_32.dll, and ir50_qc.dll into the
system32 directory and start playing the video?
Back when Intel owned the codec, you also had to register one of the dlls with regsvr32.exe. It held true for a while after Ligos bought Indeo from Intel, but I don't know if it's still true. There used to be developer notes on their web site that described the process. http://www.ligos.com

Last time I looked, Ligos charges a fee for the distribution license.
