I don't know exactly what happens when images are being imported into the cast, but the following is my guess.
It might be something like this -- copying the content of the image ( select all > copy ) into a new image ( in this case cast member ), naturally a new image which is not compressed ( can say a lossless compression ). So only when u make the cast into dcr it is actually compressed . I don't think my explaination is correct, but just gives an idea.
