OK, now I *have* done some testing. PS 7 vs. FWMX (Win2000) I made some very fuzzy balls in PS (Feather 10), in different colors. Black background in the bottom layer for comparison with Dir later.
Saved as PSD without alpha channel (No selection saved) for import into FW. Saved for Web (png 24 + transp.) from PS. Opened PSD in FW and exported as png32 & transparent matte. Imported both into Director. Placed both castmembers on a black Stage. Absolutely no difference in quality. A slightly smaller file size with FW, though. Importing a PSD with saved selection (alpha) showed the white fringes as usual, very obvious against a black Stage, less visible on brighter backgrounds, of course. So: PS7-Save-For-Web-png32 vs FW-png32 is a tie. PS7-psd-with-alpha is a waste of space.
