I am doing something very similiar to your kiosk project. My case is museum
visitors slide their cards with barcode on and then Director sends this id
number to mySQL database and then return data back to Director.(a cgi script
is middleware between mysql and director) Below is what I have been doing:(I
am using Win2000 machine)

I downloaded ActivePerl from ActiveState.com. They have this binary Perl
installation file which contains things you need to write and execute Perl.
But you'll need to manually install DBI-mySQL module in order to communicate
with database(check their documentation).

Next I set up application setting under IIS to recognise .cgi file
extensions and send them to the perlis.dll that runs the cgi code.

In Director, you use getNetText() to call your cgi script and netTextResult
to get back your results.(at the end of your cgi code, put : print
"content-type:text/plain\n\n$string"; this will return the searching results
back to Director)

Hope these help!
Yachun =)
