what you suggested doesn't work either with the software renderer. It seems to be a problem of switching off DTS at runtime. This fails on all machines that use the software renderer.
Anybody else who could and would share his/her experience?
This might not be a solution but only a workaround : have you tried screenXtra for this? (even for DTS sprite : on my laptop grabbing the image from Lingo bgoes black, whereas screeXtra actually get the image)
