We have had excellent success with pretty inexpensive products from Ontrak in Canada, 
primarily the ADR101 ( http://www.ontrak.net ). Note that it's useful to purchase 
their power supply. They have a number of other products with more analog/digital i/0 
ports and functionalities. We use the Serial Xtra for communications.

We don't have any experience (yet) with their USB products, but we have had no trouble 
using a USB to serial converter (Belkin, $30).
