I have gotten as far as solving the cropping by also expanding/contracting the sprite rect, and using a scaleMode of noScale for the swf member (very intuitive :)). Animating by swapping members is also troublesome with swf members. In the past I've constructed complete swf sequences in AI and that worked very well, though one can't include sound in such. In this case with a random sequence, I trying to go with static (single frame) swf members. The one place where I have found swf to be an advantage in Director is vector graphics animations.

when did Illustrator become able to export SWF files?
I haven't used AI in many years (as you can tell), guess I need to look into it again, as I have sometimes have this same need.
Or I need to brush up on Darrell Plant's ps2vs tool.
