I would check out the EZ-IO board ( http://www.ezio.com/ ) and Michael
Rodemer's sample code for it,
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~rodemer/howTo.html -- He makes some great stuff
and it's quite easy to comprehend. Using a DirectComm or the freer serial port
xtras, you can talk to it, etc.
