Thanks to James and Irv. James you were correct, I was dealing with
duplicate instances of the behaviour. One was the script member and the
other was the actual sprite instance. I was setting the message handler call
back before the sprite was on the screen.  I have taken Irv's advice and
changed it into a global object, with an additional handler to activate and
deactivate it at will and everything works great.
