I did a project a few years ago that allowed a company to view all 
different types of media including Director based animation, 
Quicktime files (embedded in Director files), PowerPoint content, 
etc.  And yes, we used the PowerPoint Viewer to control the 
PowerPoint files.  But, if you want a Director-based piece, then you 
have to figure out a way to give "commands" to the PowerPoint Viewer. 
In my original version, I used some combination of MasterApp and 
BuddyAPI to send keystrokes to the PowerPoint Viewer and to muck with 
window layering.

This year, the client asked to have the whole thing rewritten with 
new functionality.  This time I used the PPViewer XTRA from RavWare 
to handle the communication with the PowerPoint Viewer.  It was much 
easier and cleaner.  Highly recommended.
