The flash stuff keeps its functionality, as long as it's flash 4 you are
talking about,
I'm very new to director too, and what I do (maybe it's malpractice, but it
works fine)
is creating all buttons and stuff in flash, so I don't have to bother with
lingo for rollovers
and stuff.
One tip however; if you make e.g. a flash button, don't set the flash stage
size bigger than necessary, because director keeps that rectangle "in mind",
which can be the cause of a
serious headache, if you put a series of that button close to each other,
just trying to click the one you need.
However i think you should consider using lingo for the calculator tingie -
Lingo is far more robust than actionscript - especially flash 4
actionscript.
If you ever tried C or some other nasty language, you'll find lingo to be
quite easy to learn.
I managed to make a full fledged database app after my first week with
director - so I think that proves it's not that big a deal to learn (basic)
lingo.

Have fun, I know you will.
