Is the external castlib in the same folder as the .dir file?
You can have the linked assets in subfolders, but there are
path-issues when the path of castLibs differs from the path of the
.dir movie.
Can't remember which frankly, just that they were convincing enough
to change my habit of stuffing external castlibs into a subfolder,
which I had fancied because I like that kind of tidiness.
