No, actually, the point is that people need to be aware that there are a
lot of people that receive these messages, some of whom are in countries
where they pay dearly for their phone connections. Most of them don't mind
as long as the signal to noise ratio is high, and that the information they
get from the list is effective.

Technical posts can be of help to all the members, but back and forth
messages about a job (or anything) that is only really relevant to just
those two people just creates a lot of noise for all the other
members. The potential is high for everyone to use the list to get into
side conversations dragging everyone (I won't give the number so you won't
be offended) along with them.

So that's why I used "that number" when I sent the message so people can
just keep in mind the scope of the number of people affected by what they post.

The number can be a good thing - it means you're in contact with many
people (I won't say how many :) throughout the world that can help you with
your programming problem. It can be a bad thing when there's a lot of
irrelevant posts, bickering, whatever. This list would not be effective
with only a few people on it. It's most effective when there's a lot of
people who are focused on topic. So my task (and remember, the list is
free of charge) is to keep people coming in to provide more programming
experience, which they will do if they know they're in a good sized
community, but to keep the noise levels down, by reminding people that when
they start bickering or whatever that it affects a "lot" (I won't say the
number) of people who are forced to listen, download, and sift through. So
yes, I do it, appropriately I think, for a reason. It's not like there's
any extra money from every extra person (in fact, every extra person makes
the management of the list more time consuming and expensive), but it's how
the list grows and survives.

Respectfully,

- Tab
