At its most basic level, Flash is a tool for using low-bandwidth web
animations through vector-based graphics (interfaces, animations, cartoons,
etc). Director, on the other hand, is built for the creation of full
stand-alone multimedia applications, incorporating digital video, external
data, fileIO, etc. Director uses raster-based imagery.
However, as we are now in version 8 of Director and 5 of Flash (and now
Flash is MACR's flagship product - boo!), there is a certain amount of
cross-over - Director now has native vector tools in addition to importing
Flash, Director has its own web-format (and has done for a while), and I
think Flash projectors can start doing file access now as well (don't quote
me on it).
Now that Flash has got ActionScript, a full coding language, you can start
programming a Flash animation instead of just running through frames, which
is moving towards full UI creation.
We can all go on for ages about what they can do, but your choice depends on
what YOU want to do. Give us an idea of the project you want, and we can
point you in the right direction. If you're just looking for a new
environment to learn, I'd go for Director because Lingo is easier to grasp
than ActionScript - Lingo is more akin to BASIC, where ActionScript is built
on the ECMA specification that created JavaScript. Then again Flash seems to
be taking over from Director in MACR's eyes...
I'll stop confusing you know :-(
