I know that at one point (D7?) there was definitely not support for https:
protocol. I don't really recall that it was added to D8, so if it's not in
the release notes for D8 then I would presume it's not supported still. I
know they were looking at doing it, but I don't recall whether or not it
was ever done. However, it is definitely a different support requirement,
so just because http: works doesn't mean that https: will work.
