Try using shockwave audio, mp3 or realaudio if you have director 8.5. 
Filesizes can be grealy reduced without significant quality loss. Also, you 
can link your files instead of standard import if memory matters a lot. 
beware that loading and unloading huge audiofiles can decrease performance 
and cause 'glitches' in animations.
