I have had the same experience on other machines than laptops. And: preloading QT is a tricky thing. Doesn't always work as expected. (dir 8, win2000) Sometimes it helps to begin the movie with the same quicktime that you want to use, but playing silently off the stage for some seconds before the actual program starts.
This way the quicktime you see is not that playing for the first time. Sometimes that helps. Good luck!
