Colin and Christian, thank you for your suggestions.

I found out a work around, though it was not very elegant.  The bitmap
cast member to set 'trimWhiteSpace' property should be linked to
external file before setting it.

newMember = new(#bitmap)
newMember.fileName = "External.bmp"  -- links to an external bitmap file
newMember.trimWhiteSpace = false  -- sets the property
newMember.fileName = "External.bmp"  -- links to the file again

The first time when an external bitmap file is set to the 'fileName'
property of a bitmap cast member, its white space will be trimmed.  After
the 'trimWhiteSpace' property is set to 'false', it works with the cast
member.  But its center point will be not the center of the bitmap.
