The bitmap that plays over the top is movable (as in the user moves an
overlay onto the image, so it's covering a certain item in the movie).

And I meant to say I cannot change the directToStage of the sprite (which
defaults to true) because it's crap performance (although I'm guessing you
understood what I meant anyway, and just felt like baiting me :)

I might clarify my question again.  I don't wish to mask the video, I just
wish to place another bitmap on top.  Is there anyway to place a bitmap on
top of a video without getting unacceptable performance from turning
directToStage off?  Xtras?

I have looked into the videoSprite extra but it only seems to accept video
capture devices as the source of the video.  It would be perfect if it just
let me connect a video file to it.

That's a contradiction, isn't it?

Anyway, look into setting the mask of the QuickTime member as Fergus
says, but keep the movie direct to stage. That way you can surround
an irregular shape of video with other bitmaps, and still keep good
video performance.
