You can also use BuddyAPI to check the registry for the presence of an installed modem. Keep in mind that this does not guarantee that the modem is actually physically present, it just notifies you that a modem (actually, its drivers) has been installed, and it hasn't been uninstalled (at least not properly). Also, each OS has different keys that store these values, so you will need to do a case analysis for each OS. (PC only)
