re: relative path...

I tried putting the file on the same level, and also putting it in a folder
one level down and accessing it as foldername/filename however, it just
completely ignored it. I also tried using
c:/shockwavefiles/textfolder/filename type path but that didn't work either.
The only way I could get it to work was by setting up PWS and calling it as
an actual URL, but unfortunatley that won't be available on the  systems we
are developing it for. And they won't have net access either so putting the
text on a server is out of the question too.

have you tried getNetText with a relative path?
You can't do file stuff in shockwave 'cos of security considerations.
