We built a project using Flash in Director and ran into the same problem.
Making the Flash play direct to stage help a bit, but nothing compared to
when you played Flash in browser or in the Flash player.

I wouldn't be surprised if Flash plays in Director in a Flash player
emulator, in the same way as Windows in Virtual PC. Usable but much slower.

The only other solution I know would be to limit your SWF to smaller
dimensions.
