It was 1951 when the first conference was held in Australia dedicated
to computers. In the Department of Electrical Engineering at Sydney
University, mathematicians and physicists battled over the meaning of
terms such as storage, memory and program. Digital computing was
emerging and taking over from the ancient analogue machines where
physical gears grated and clunked somehow producing results. A new age
was being born. Historian Barbara Ainsworth takes us back to 1951, a
world very different from today.
