Syncing to just one upstream NTP server is not sufficient (it's a SPOF): http://support.ntp.org/bin/view/Support/SelectingOffsiteNTPServers#Section_5.3.3. We're now configuring our servers with 5 sources (which are internal) and each of those 5 sources sync with 5 different upstream sources.
