This is outdated information. Telstra's initial NBN offering indeed delivered voice via the CPE which used the UNI-D (data) port. However, since then, they have additionally allowed users to make use of the UNI-V (voice) port without requiring the Telstra-supplied gateway. I doubt legacy customers would have been upgraded automatically.
