Hi Jim,

There may well have been a Denial of Service attack. But how come the attackers knew to attack at 7pm, when most householders were attempting to complete the census, and the ABS/IBM/Government and who ever else was being paid to run the census did not. Particularly as the questions related to the night of the census.

How did those who completed the census early, including the Prime Minister, know where they would spend that night?

It possibly turned into an all nighter on 9th August for those involved in the Census.

I'm not quite sure why everyone is discounting a DDoS without access to
logs. They are occurring semi continuously around the globe. There is a
significant "libertarian" in the grey/black internet that would like to see
the census - and really anything to do with government - fail. The more
spectacularly the better. Most DoS attacks are only noticed by sysops and
aren't reported widely if at all so have limited kudos value.
