Thanks everyone. Hamish, your answer is the one that seems to be contentious and hence the reason for my question to the list. However, your answer confirms my previous impression.

Do you also know whether there is a physical limitation to the distance between the modem and router? I am asking because I live in a converted warehouse and want the wireless router to be near the back half of the property not the front where the telco cabinet is. I have been told by TPG that the router must be plugged in to the same power point as the modem but for the life of me, can not work out why. If this is a real limitation, my thought is to purchase a powered router/switch and install that on the telco cabinet, and run an ethernet cable to my wifi router.

I can't think why TPG would say that, except that it might simplify things for their customer support people if customers have to call for help.

The NCD is connected to the router with Ethernet, so the standard distance limit of 100m applies.
