Well, you could install VM...8-)

I keep a IPLable tape of the installation Linux system around as a
emergency rescue system.  If there's a problem like this, you can IPL
the tape and get the Linux environment up to the point where you can
make changes like this and then reboot to the real system. Of course,
the implication is that your rescue system is the same version as the
system being recovered (there is a difference in behavior in
silo/zilo/zipl, and it needs to match your setup). You also have to do
one system at a time -- the tape obviously can't be shared while it's in
use.

If you had VM, you could define saved systems for the rescue systems
(see the archives on snapshotting a partially initialized system), and
then your rescue system is just a SPXTAPE LOAD away.
