There was an article about this back in September of 2001.  Check out

Basically IBM has stated that if/when Linux ever "grows up" to the point it
_can_ replace AIX, IBM is willing to do that.  Not only on zSeries, but
across all the architectures where AIX runs.

  I had taken a class in AIX SP sysadmin a couple of months ago
and the instructor mentioned that through the grape-vine that
he heard that IBM was comtemplating the idea of AIX possibly
being replaced by LINUX running on the zSeries machines??
  Is this guy dreamimng or is there any shread of truth to that?
