The samba.org web site is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Samba. The following page has a link to the original Usenet post by Andrew Tridgell announcing a "0.5 version" of a package that would allow access to Sun disks from Windows. The rest of the main page is a (relatively) interesting recap of the evolution of the product and team over the years.
http://www.samba.org/samba/10years.html On the main page of your local samba.org mirror is a link to a PC Magazine article on choosing a Linux distribution for your PC. One of the segments of the article compares Linux/Samba performance against Windows 2000 on three different machines. In all three cases, Samba "won." You can see the verbiage at http://www.pcmag.com/article/0,2997,s%253D1474%2526a%253D16554,00.asp, or you can just look at the charts at http://common.ziffdavisinternet.com/util_get_image/0/0,3363,s%253D1%2526i%25 3D5575,00.gif and http://common.ziffdavisinternet.com/util_get_image/0/0,3363,s%253D1%2526i%25 3D5576,00.gif Mark Post
