I think the idea is, the md modules are already there.

If you had LVM available, you'd certainly want to use it.  But since he
doesn't, md is less hassle than retrofitting LVM.

I once used md with IDE disks on the same controller to implement
RAID-1.  It was incredibly slow, but it worked.

In fact: Florian, you're reading this, right?  This was on a Jurix box
that is *still* in production in Maryland.
