Greeetings; DDR will allow you to copy/restore to different cylinders and there are no restrictions noted as to where that can be, other than obviously you can't put the data outside the limits of the device!

Your mini disks start at cylinder 1 now, so you will need to copy them over to make them start at cylinder 0. I don't think DDR will let you move the disk one cylinder down in place, so you would need one spare pack move them one by one. Your current VM LPAR will probably have access to more DASD than just the Linux packs (at least the z/VM ones) and you may want to think twice before you bring up Linux as the loaded gun with a just a typo away from zapping other folks disks. >Am I on the right track here or do I need to tweek more stuff? It's not just IP addresses. You need to have the network drivers to talk to the real thing, and put those addresses in. >The reason why I am doing this is to test the performance of a >stand-alone linux as it compares to a zVM linux. Has anyone out there >tried this?, is there a lot of zVM overhead that would effect Linux >performance?. It depends. The most interesting results you can have is by comparing apples and pears. If you have just a single Linux image and nothing else, then z/VM does not do you much good. If you have more than a few Linux images you have no option. There's a small area in between. Rob
