Are you sure it "hangs"? I think "Repair #" could be the maintenance prompt.
I don't know RH linux, but it seems as if there is a problem while checking
or mounting the root filesystem. Because of this you end up in maintenance
mode with the root filesystem mounted readonly and now have the chance to
fix the problem (eg. run e2fsck).
