He reported off-line that indeed they were on a 3990 CU. Even when
the disks have been used before (i.e. he did ICKDSF install) then
that does not explain whey the dasd driver refuses to pick them up.
Now I probably did not stare long enough to the source, but it looks
like there are no fixed constants in it, so that should be fine. For
what I could tell it looked like there is support for 3390's on a 3880
and I figure that could be a typo there.
