hello,
i followed the instructions and it appears the qdio driver was loaded,
all of the errors that i was getting did not appear. however, i am still
not working yet. there was a new error msg in the log:
qeth: IPv6 not supported on eth0.
is this stopping me? this is the only new msg.
regards,
steve

Steve, in the z800 Technical Introduction Redbook there is a chapter on
Linux that describes how to install SuSE 2.4.7 and QDIO. There is a bug
(syntax error) in the installation which doesn't add the portname
correctly. Here are some of the steps necessary:
OSA Express Fast Ethernet in QDIO mode
The installation procedure for the SuSE LINUX 2.4.7 distribution has a
minor bug that
prevents the automatic setup QDIO mode. However, this setup can be
performed manually.
To do this, select option 0 (no network). For security reasons, set up the
root temporary
password first:
passwd root
Then set up the network, using the following commands:
echo 'noauto ' >>/proc/chandev
echo 'qeth0,0x0e30,0x0e31,0x0e32,0,0 '>/proc/chandev
echo 'add_parms,0x10,0x0e30,0x0e32,portname:RPTRFET1 ' >>/proc/chandev
insmod qdio
insmod qeth
ifconfig eth0 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 10.0.0.255 up
/etc/rc.d/inetd start
/etc/rc.d/portmap start
Post YaST setup for network in QDIO mode
Our SuSE version could not automatically configure a QDIO interface. We
assume this will be
fixed in later SuSE releases. To bypass the problem in our release, we
performed the
following steps while still running in the Telnet session connected to the
ramdisk Linux on the
z800. After YaST has finished its installation processes, we issued the
following commands:
mkdir /mnt/newroot
mount /dev/dasda1 /mnt/newroot
cd /mnt/newroot/etc
We used vi to edit the chandev.conf and modules.conf files in the
/mnt/newroot/etc directory.
In modules.conf, we changed:
alias eth0 off
to:
alias eth0 qeth
In chandev.conf, we added the following lines:
noauto
qeth0,0x0e30,0x0e31,0x0e32,0,0
add_parms,0x10,0x0e30,0x0e32,portname:RPTRFET1

hello mark,
do you mean the portname defined in vtam for the OSA-E.
i am installing SUSE server 7 (kernel 2.4) and using the 'boot from cd'
option. from the first menu i select '3' for the gigabit OSA. later, i
enter in the device's or auto(i've done both) and then enter in a port
name. i have enter'd a portname, however the vtam on the CEC in question
did not have one defined, and still got the error.
also, i was refered to a marist listserv entry from carlos ordonez on
01/31/2002. this item implies a bug in the SUSE install. i attempted it
with no success
regards, steve

Steve,
Don't keep looking, your problem is that you _must_ specify a portname.
That has been true for every person that has reported running into that
particular error message. It's never been clear if Linux/390 can _set_
that
portname (maybe you and your IBM rep can figure that out), but it is _very_
clear that it must match the portname. If Linux/390 can't set it, use one
of your other operating systems to do so, and then update your Linux/390
parameters to match. Make sure you specify the portname in all upper case.

hello gerald,
thanks for your reply.
yes, the OSA will be shared, but the linux lpar is the only one using it
at this time. on this CEC we do not have a portname defined in vtam at this
time.
still looking

Steve,
Is this OSA/SF shared with other MVS LPARS? If it is you have
to use the same portname you used in your TRLE definitions.
Good luck....
