Well, in an LPAR, you don't have a lot of choices. This is where VM pays for itself -- you don't have to reinvent all these wheels. > IBM's DFHSM does not recognize the DASD format. Make sure you have a relatively modern Linux distributions. The major players (SuSE, RH, Turbo, etc) offer an option of a OS/390-friendly "compatible" disk layout that has a volume label, etc that allow it to be online to a OS/390 system and get backed up normally. I think the "cdl" format is now the default, so you must have an older system. > What about SILO's, we have STC's for mid-range and mainframe use. UTs has some support for these in BAR, but not much. Most people run under VM and let the VM system handle interacting with stuff like this. > What about Tape Manangement Systems? Whats keeping track of, where? Welcome to Unix tape "management". There ain't any, other than CA Reel Librarian, which has it's own set of problems. Another reason to run VM -- there you have a choice of several, and getting Linux to play nice is a matter of writing a simple REXX socket app to issue the commands on behalf of the Linux guest.
