In the IDE world its one pending I/O per drive pair with overlapping seeks
across the master slave. In the SCSI world you can have multiple outstanding
commands to the disk and the let the disk figure out how to schedule them.

I'm not sure how the performance compares to S390 - a well tuned IDE disk array
will touch 100Mbytes/second. A decent SCSI array with something like an aacraid
will top out at about 200Mbytes/second.
