Hello Jill,

Thanks for the info.

I followed SuSE's instructions on creating an IPL tape and used that for the
IPL of the LPAR. This worked fine - I did not get the "Kernel panic"
message this time. The only reason why I chose the DASD IPL volume (using
instructions that I got from another Manual) was because it was easier to
IPL from DASD than from tape.

Hi Dave,

While I certainly admit to being a complete rookie in the Linux world, I
don't think the error you are getting is because of a missing file. I am
getting the exact same error when IPLing from the VM reader. Since there
are only 3 files in the reader, and they are getting started with an EXEC,
I am sure I have an initrd file and that it is getting loaded. Question:
At the beginning of your IPL, there is a message "Command line is:" followed
by text. The text that is printed should be your parm card. When I attempt

to IPL, the line is blank after the command line phrase. Just wondered if
you had the same result. On a post from the archives, Dougie Lawson
suggested
that the problem lies in the parm card.
"The clue is
>Kernel panic VFS: unable to mount root fs on 01:00

On my system:

    linux390:/ # ls -l /dev/ram0
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk 1, 0 Nov 3 08:48 /dev/ram0

So that tells me that your IPL can't mount the root filesystem on
/dev/ram0.

Which must mean that the parmline you used for silo has
    root=/dev/ram0
rather than
    root=/dev/dasdX1"

The above didn't have any relevance I could find to my install, but maybe
it will help you.

Subject: Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 01:00

Hello,

I am working on installing SuSE Linux 7.0 in one of our LPARS. I created a
DASD IPL Linux volume and used that to IPL the LPAR. The IPL goes normally
until it gets to the following messages, after which it dies:

Lvm - Driver successfully initialized
Md driver 0.36.6 MAX_MD_DEV=4, MAXREAL=8
Partition check:
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 01:00

Does anyone know what is going on here? I tried it again, but the same
thing happened.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.
