Put simply. te firewall is the lock on the door.

The IDS is the burlar alarm that goes off when the door's opened.

If those aren't enough, you look at hardening the system with LIDS, Bastille, selinux 
or similar.


I don't know if LIDS works on S/390, but if you want to see what it can do, look for
