There was some speculation on the list that SMP kernels wouldn't actually honor the vmhalt parameter. (Or it was that SMP kernels would, but non-SMP kernels would not.) Try rebuilding your kernel to the opposite mode and see what happens. I'd be interested in finding out if _either_ type kernel really works or not. Note that if you're using any of the IBM OCO network drivers (HiperSockets, or QDIO) that this will probably cause them to not function.
