Linux for S/390 is a different processing model than VSE is and in some ways
they can be complimentary to each other. If your customer does not want to
use VSE anymore, there could be ways to utilize Linux functions, but that is
not a request that is made very often here.

On the other hand, Linux can run side by side with VSE and can host new
applications and functions while VSE still runs some part of the business.
Your client surely has a fair amount of time invested in their applications
running on VSE. There is significant new function in VSE where Linux
applications can access VSE resources (VSAM, CICS, DL1, whatever). Linux and
VSE can run together, Linux doesn't necessarily need to replace VSE in these
cases.

To answer your other questions:
2). DB2 UDB is available for Linux for S/390. Oracle has announced their 9i
availability for this summer
3). Linux has native S390 tape drivers and there are a number of commercial
backup options available. The traditional open source packages (Amanda) and
utilities (tar, cpio) are, of course, available as well. With those packages
and utilities you are relegated to using their media management model or
going back to a manual based model. As far as I know, there is no link into
DYNAM from anything on Linux.
