Let me broaden this inquiry a bit. Given multiple servers of multiple varieties (ie Linux/390, Linux/x86, HPUX, zVM, OS/390 and z/OS), are there system automation tools in the Linux world that should be imported into the zVM, z/OS environment to allow the Linux automation to control aspects of the other environment, such as assignment of tape drives, orderly shutdown/restart of databases (MySQL/Postres/Oracle/etc) without an operator/sysadmin logging on to each system to issue commands?

I'm not sure how I would get a process on a linux LPAR to send a message to the S/390 console either. To clarify my situatuion: I have ONE tape drive available, which lives in the magstar library. I have not as yet defined it to Linux because I'm not sure how to 'part time' own the thing. I can't have it 24/7. We have an s/390 side automation tool, Ops/MVS which I suspect could be used to telnet into the linux LPAR, vary the device off to the various systems in the sysplex, make it available on the linux LPAR and then have amanda go to work. I don't know how cumbersome that would be either. Still would be better than Tar and FTP I susepct. Anyone have any ideas on how to best implement what I just outlined? (the automation tool stuff)
