Greetings...
The following steps might help isolate the problem. I have never seen
a HiperSockets interface return that status before.
(1) Are you running on z/VM 4.2.0 or z/VM 4.3.0 ?
>From a 'CP READ' console status issue the command:
CP QUERY CPLEVEL
to find out.
(2) LOGON the Linux virtual machine and couple the NIC to the LAN
(this might be done for you automatically if it was setup in your user
directory
entry) --- But DO NOT IPL your Linux yet.
(3) From a 'RUNNING' or 'VM READ' or 'CP READ' console status issue the
command:
CP QUERY NIC DETAIL
Check the LAN attribute to confirm you are connected to the Guest LAN that
you want.
There should be a lot of "unassigned" settings at this point.
The devices created for the Virtual NIC should be 1800, 1801, and 1802
(based on
the addresses listed in your Linux configuration).
(4) Setup an I/O trace for simulated activity on your NIC devices:
CP TRACE IO 1800-1802 INST INT CCW RUN
or (if you are running z/VM 4.3.0) add the IODATA 800 option:
CP TRACE IO 1800-1802 INST INT CCW IODATA 800 RUN
(5) IPL your Linux disk (or probably your reader in this case) and repeat
the sequence
that you followed before. The spooled console should indicate whether the
other
devices had similar problems... and might help me understand why such an
unusual
device status would be returned to the driver.
(6) After the qeth driver finishes complaining, you can eliminate the I/O
trace by
the command (Use PA1 to get to CP READ status):
CP TRACE END
(7) You can find some additional information about the chandev
configuration
by entering (to your Linux command line):
cat /proc/chandev
I would be curious to know whether the I/O trace shows I/O failures for the
other
two devices (1800 and 1801) and whether the trace agrees with the device
status
for 1802.
