For those of you looking for arguments to bolster use of mainframes versus distributed servers in your company, take a look at this "management brief" on IBM's web site. There's a downloadable PDF file there. The lead-in to the paper says: ITG conducted a study comparing the five-year total cost of ownership (TCO) of IBM eserver platforms compared to other servers in three different customer environments (ERP, retail and financial services). The TCO of the IT infrastructure, in all scenarios, spans hardware, software, personnel, facilities and services for servers. IBM consistently beat out Sun and Compaq in helping customers to reduce TCO, by as much as 31%.
